Meet fashion fundi Maria McCloy

29 Apr, 2016

Everywhere you look in Maboneng, you’ll see the African-inspired garb first sold by Maria McCloy. She used her pan-African childhood travels and natural flair for fashion to set up a wildly successful market stall at Market on Main, which has turned into a living, breathing trend of its own.

Wherever she travelled as a child, Maria was drawn to textiles – her favourite places to visit were markets in Nigeria and Mozambique. And after establishing her own media business, Black Rage, which closed in 2009, she went back to her first love: fashion.

She talks to Face to Face with Success about what it means to take risks and try, even when failure is an option and the revival of a truly Afro-centric aesthetic.
