When he joined Telkom in 2013 to resurrect the parastatal from what looked like a bleak and grey future, Sipho Maseko believed success wasn’t just about providing a better service. It had to start with giving meaning and purpose to the people working at Telkom – both within and without – from technicians to call centre agents. If Telkom’s workforce were given the support they needed to feel valued and competent, great service would follow.

Maseko was right. The energetic and purposeful ex-lawyer has fruitfully transformed both the internal culture and public perception of what was once a failing (and flailing) entity and turned it into a high-functioning telecommunications force. Here’s how he achieved the seemingly insurmountable task.
